All Aboard: Unforgettable Scenic Train Wedding in Elkins West Virginia
An Adventurous Mountain Wedding in Randolph County
Some couples dream of a ballroom. Some picture a rustic barn. Beth and Greg? They looked at each other and decided, “Let’s take our favorite people on a vintage train ride deep into the Allegheny Highlands and get married in the wild.” (Iconic behavior, honestly.)
When they first reached out looking for an Elkins, WV wedding photographer for a scenic mountain rail excursion, I was already hooked. But nothing prepared me for the sheer, unfiltered joy of this day. Beth and Greg are the kind of couple whose connection sets the tone for everyone around them. No stiff posing, no forced moments, just continuous laughter, radiant energy, and Greg looking at Beth like she is his entire universe.
Vintage Depot Vibes & A Heartfelt First Look
The day began in the heart of historic downtown Elkins. The restored Elkins Depot area feels like stepping straight onto a classic film set. The contrast of delicate bridal lace against rich ironwork, weathered rail platforms, and heritage train cars gave their portraits an effortless, editorial feel right from the start.
Greg’s reaction during their first look had everyone fighting back happy tears. Beth was glowing, and watching the two of them instantly ground each other before the whirlwind began was easily one of the sweetest moments of the morning.
Journey Along the Shavers Fork to High Falls
Once guests boarded the vintage passenger coaches, the whistle blew, and our wilderness journey began.
Powered by vintage diesel locomotives, the train departed Elkins and began its climb along the rushing, cascading waters of the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. This route is pure Appalachian magic: carving through mountain grades, winding through an “S” curve tunnel, crossing a breathtaking high bridge, and opening up to miles of untouched Monongahela National Forest.
Inside, the warm wood-paneled cars were filled with natural window light, clinking glasses, and belly laughs echoing down the tracks as everyone soaked in the views together.
Saying “I Do” at the Mountain Summit
When the train reached its turnaround destination deep in the wilderness. Near the thundering High Falls of Cheat. Everyone stepped out into the crisp mountain air.
Surrounded by towering pines, sweeping mountain grades, and the rushing river below, Beth and Greg stood at the top of the mountain and exchanged their vows. Having an intimate ceremony off the rails in the middle of untouched forest felt grounded, sacred, and entirely true to who they are.
Golden Hour & An Evening to Remember at Graceland Inn
After the scenic rail ride back down the mountain, the celebration transitioned to the historic Graceland Inn, perched gracefully on the hillside overlooking Elkins.
West Virginia showed off with the kind of crisp, glowing mountain afternoon photographers dream about. We explored the estate’s sweeping stone verandas, manicured lawns, and panoramic overlook just as the sun dipped behind the ridge, capturing their newlywed portraits in pure golden-hour light.
Between the Victorian architectural charm, an incredible dinner, heartfelt toasts, and a packed dance floor under the evening lights, Beth and Greg closed out the day surrounded by the warmth of their favorite people. It was adventurous, timeless, and completely unforgettable.
